And the LORD said, "I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the LORD, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.  Ex 33:19

REVELATION

INTRODUCTION:

  • Authorship:     John the Apostle (from Jesus Christ)

  • Written to:      Seven Churches of Asia

  • Date:               A.D. 95 or 96

  • From:              The Isle of Patmos where John was exiled.

  • Purpose:         To describe the triumph of God's kingdom when Christ returns to establish His Earthly kingdom, and to describe the events surrounding His coming.

FOUR BASIC INTERPRETATIONS:

  1.          Preterist  -       for that day only

  2.           Historical  -    panorama of history

  3.          Futurist  -        all after chapter 4 is end-time.

  4.          Spiritualist  - all symbolic / not literal

My own view is a combination of the Historical and Futurist views.  We will take the position that Revelation consists of 7 Visions and that each of these visions stand independently.  They each have their own chronology.  (See 7 Visions Chronology)  It is important to note that language and scriptural evidence will demonstrate that The Seven Years of Great Tribulation does NOT consist of: The Seals, followed by The Trumpets, followed by The Bowls of Wrath.  We will further demonstrate scripturally that The Last Days have been going on since the Day of Pentecost, and that we are quickly approaching The End of The Last Days.

I am indebted to my New Testament professor from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Dr. Douglas Ezell and his book, Revelations on Revelation: New Sounds from Old Symbols.  Unfortunately this book is now out of print.  Many of my own views come from Dr. Ezell, who did his doctoral dissertation on Revelation.  -Author Comans

TWO BROAD DIVISIONS:

  • Chapter 1 – 3;             Thing which are –

  • Chapters 4 – 22;          Things which are to come – (as of AD 96)
